similar but different: words easy confused

  1. police intervened when it was clear that the protest would turn violent.
  2. If the phone has been disconected, you'll hear a continuous tone.
  3. the stationery cupboard is in the secretary's office.
  4. He's continually sending me e-mail asking for a pay rise!
  5. Jean complimented her on her informative and entertaining presentation.
  6. She'd been drinking heavily, and crashed into a stationary car
  7. At the referee's signal, Ronaldo took the penalty kick.
  8. She accused her morther of interfering in her private life.
  9. The shadows of the mountains looked like sleeping giants on the ground.
  10. The circular red sign with a while line across it means 'No entry.'

intervene: become involved, to become involved in a situation in order to try to stop a filght, argument, problem, etc

interfere: to try to control or become involved in a situation in a way that is annoying
